Gamertag Length Limits by Platform: Xbox, PlayStation, Roblox and More
Every platform sets its own rules for gamertag length and characters, and the rules are not the same. As a safe rule, a name of 5 to 12 characters that uses only letters and numbers works on every major platform covered here. If you want to use the full limit or add symbols, check the platform first. This guide covers Xbox, PlayStation, Minecraft, Fortnite and Roblox, and it tells you how well each rule is sourced.
Our Gamertag Generator has a platform limit menu that applies these rules for you. Use it to see which names fit and which are too long.
Limits at a glance

| PlayStation | 3 to 16 documented | Letters, numbers, hyphens, underscores | Third-party guides |
| Minecraft Java | 3 to 16 | Letters, numbers, underscores | Third-party guides |
| Fortnite (Epic display name) | 3 to 16 | Content rules apply | Epic Games help page |

Xbox
Xbox has two kinds of gamertag, and that causes most of the confusion. Microsoft's developer documentation describes a classic gamertag with a maximum of 15 characters. It supports ASCII letters, numbers, a comma and a space. It also describes a modern gamertag with a maximum of 12 characters, with each character allowed at most one diacritic.
The modern system adds an automatic number suffix when your chosen name is already taken. The suffix appears after a # sign. The documentation says a modern gamertag with 12 characters is limited to a three-digit suffix, because the full unique name must stay within 16 rendered characters.
News reports say Microsoft has tested a 15-character limit for fully unique Latin-letter names with Xbox Insiders. That is a test, not a rule for everyone, so plan for 12 characters.
Our generator avoids underscores when you select Xbox, because Xbox's classic character list does not include them.
PlayStation
PlayStation calls your name an Online ID. Third-party guides agree on a documented range of 3 to 16 characters. The ID must start with a letter and can contain letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. One checker site adds that the ID cannot start or end with a hyphen or an underscore, and that 3 and 4 character IDs are reserved. We found that claim on only one site, so treat it as likely but unconfirmed. The simple fix is to aim for 5 characters or more.
We could not find these rules on an official PlayStation page during our check. Confirm on PlayStation's account page before you commit.
Minecraft
On Minecraft Java Edition, several guides list the same rules: 3 to 16 characters using letters, numbers and underscores, with no spaces. These come from third-party sources, so confirm them on your Minecraft profile page.
There is one more catch. A Sportskeeda guide says console players on Bedrock Edition use names tied to their Xbox gamertag or PlayStation Online ID, so they cannot simply change a Minecraft-only name. In that case, the rules of Xbox or PlayStation apply, not the Java rules.
Fortnite and Epic Games
Epic's official help page says a display name must be between 3 and 16 characters. It also says the name cannot include vulgarity, hate speech or offensive language, direct references to Epic employees, products, services or characters, or private personal information such as phone numbers, addresses or real names. Epic says a name that breaks the rules may be rejected or reset to a random one.
One third-party guide says that on PlayStation and Xbox, your console name may show in Fortnite instead of your Epic display name. If you play on a console, check which name other players see.
Roblox
Several guides agree that Roblox usernames are 3 to 20 characters. They use letters and numbers, and at most one underscore. One guide adds that the underscore must sit inside the name, not at the start or end. Spaces, emojis and other symbols are not allowed.
Roblox also has display names, which are separate from usernames. One guide says display names can include spaces and some special characters. Your username is the unique account name, so the length and character rules above apply to it. Roblox has not been checked against an official page in our review, so confirm on Roblox before you commit.
Why limits matter in practice
- Truncation. Long names can be cut off in kill feeds, party lists, scoreboards and overlays.
- Rejection. A name over the limit is simply refused, and you lose time.
- Readability. Short names are easier to read quickly, even where the limit is generous.
- Consistency. If you play on several systems, a name that fits all of them lets friends find you easily.
One name that works everywhere
The strictest platform decides what works everywhere. Taking the limits above together, the safe zone is:
- Length: 5 to 12 characters.
- Characters: letters and numbers only.
- No underscores, spaces or symbols.
- Start with a letter.
Sample names, checked against the limits
| Name | Length | Fits Xbox (12) | Fits PlayStation (16) | Fits Roblox (20) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zytek | 5 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PrimeAnchor | 11 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| LethalClutch | 12 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| FrostViper_07 | 13 | No | Yes | Yes |
| CopperLantern | 13 | No | Yes | Yes |
| VelvetCartographer | 18 | No | No | Yes |
Length is only part of the check. FrostViper_07 also has an underscore, which Xbox does not support. Drop the underscore and it becomes FrostViper07 at 12 characters, which fits. These are sample names and have not been checked for availability.
Usernames, display names and platform names
Many games show more than one kind of name, and each has its own rules:
- Account username. The unique name tied to your login, like a Roblox username.
- Display name. The name others see, like an Epic display name or a Roblox display name.
- Platform name. The Xbox gamertag or PlayStation Online ID that sometimes replaces the game's own name on that console.
Before you pick a name, find out which one other players will see. Our guide to choosing a gamertag explains how to match the name to the way you play.
How to verify a name
- Pick a name that fits the safe zone above.
- Open the official profile or account page for your platform. Our tool pages link to them.
- Enter the name. Only the platform can say whether it is free.
- Read the current rules on the same page, because they can change.
- If it is rejected, change one part and try again. Our guide on making a unique gamertag shows how.
Rules about changing a name later also vary. Some platforms limit how often you can change it, and some charge a fee. Read the platform's support page before you rely on changing it.
Common mistakes
- Assuming one limit applies on every platform.
- Forgetting that a number suffix on Xbox counts toward the total.
- Using underscores on Xbox, or more than one on Roblox.
- Starting a PlayStation ID with a number or symbol.
- Choosing a 3 or 4 character PlayStation name that may be reserved.
- Confusing a display name with a username.
- Using personal information, which Epic and other platforms do not allow.
- Relying on an old guide when the rules may have changed.
- Assuming a name is free without checking the official page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum length of an Xbox gamertag?
Microsoft documents 12 characters for modern gamertags and 15 for classic ones. A number suffix is added if your name is taken. Microsoft has tested 15 for unique Latin-letter names with Insiders, but plan for 12.
How long can a PlayStation name be?
Third-party guides document 3 to 16 characters, starting with a letter. Aim for 5 or more because shorter IDs may be reserved.
Can I use an underscore on every platform?
No. Xbox's classic character list does not include it, and Roblox allows only one. Skip underscores if you want one name that works everywhere.
Is Fortnite's limit the same as Epic Games'?
Fortnite uses your Epic display name, which Epic says must be 3 to 16 characters. On consoles, your platform name may show instead.
Does the generator know which names are taken?
No. It checks length and character rules for the platform you select, but only the platform can confirm that a name is free.
Conclusion
Length rules differ by platform, and the strictest one sets the limit for a single name. Aim for 5 to 12 letters and numbers, check the official page for each platform you use, and treat third-party rules as likely but unconfirmed. When you are ready, open the Gamertag Generator, choose your platform limit, and pick a name that fits.
