An Xbox gamertag is the name tied to your profile on Xbox consoles, Windows and the Xbox app. The key facts are simple. Modern gamertags allow up to 12 characters, and a number suffix is added if your chosen name is already taken. Older classic gamertags allowed up to 15 characters. Your first change is reported to be free and later changes cost money. This guide explains how the rules work, what the suffix looks like, how to build names that fit within 12 characters, and more than 60 original ideas.

The Gamertag Generator has an Xbox option in its platform menu. It limits names to 12 characters and avoids underscores, so every result fits the main rules covered below.

How modern and classic gamertags differ

Microsoft's developer documentation describes two forms. A classic gamertag has a maximum of 15 characters, and the supported characters are ASCII letters, numbers, a comma and a space. A modern gamertag has a maximum of 12 characters, with each character allowed at most one diacritic, and it works with the suffix system.

The change to 12 characters happened because the system added room for a suffix. A 2019 news report quoted Microsoft as saying the new gamertag is a 12-character, Unicode-based name with an auto-generated suffix, supporting 13 alphabets and more than 200 languages. If you kept an older gamertag, you did not need to do anything and you did not get a suffix.

How the suffix works

If the base name you choose is already in use, Xbox lets you keep it by adding a number after a # sign. The suffix is shown in a smaller font and a different color on modern screens so your chosen name stays the focus. According to Microsoft's documentation, the full unique modern gamertag can be up to 16 rendered characters. A 12-character name leaves room for a three-digit suffix. A shorter name leaves room for a longer one.

That has a practical effect on naming. A name like SilentTracer may already be in use, so you might become SilentTracer#4821. Many players prefer a base name no one else uses, so they get no suffix and a cleaner look. Our guide to making a unique gamertag shows how to build one.

The 15-character test

News reports say Microsoft has tested bringing back 15-character gamertags with Xbox Insiders, in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring. As reported, the longer limit applies only to unique names that use Latin characters. If a name is not unique and needs a suffix, or uses non-Latin characters, the limit stays at 12. This is a test, not a general rule. Plan for 12 characters so your name works for everyone.

Changing your gamertag later

Several guides report that your first gamertag change is free and later changes cost a fee. When the modern system launched, reports put the fee at US$9.99, and one guide says it varies by region. Prices change, so check the Xbox page before you rely on a change. Guides also say a name change does not wipe your account, and that friends are notified of the new name.

Because changes can cost money, it is worth taking a few minutes to pick well the first time. Our guide on choosing a gamertag gives you a checklist.

What this means for your name

  • Aim for 12 characters or fewer. That is the safe modern limit.
  • Prefer letters and numbers. The classic character list has no underscore, so our tool avoids them for Xbox.
  • Avoid the suffix if you can. A base name nobody else uses looks cleaner.
  • Check the preview. One guide says the change screen shows how the name will look on different devices, including older classic displays. Look at both before you confirm.
  • Remember older games. One guide says older games and Xbox 360 titles may show the suffix differently or not support some characters.

Building a name that fits in 12 characters

Twelve characters is enough for two short words. A simple plan: pick words of about five or six letters each, use capitals to mark where each word starts, and skip separators.

NameLengthFits 12Note
AshenOmen9YesRoom for a long suffix if needed
VelvetTide10YesShort and smooth
PrimeAnchor11YesCalm and team-ready
LethalClutch12YesAt the limit, three-digit suffix room only
CopperCottage13NoOne letter too long
FrostViper_0713NoToo long and has an underscore

If a name is one or two letters too long, shorten one word. CopperCottage becomes CopperCabin (11), which fits.

Xbox gamertags on other games

Your gamertag does not stay on Xbox alone. A Sportskeeda guide says console players on Minecraft Bedrock use names tied to their Xbox gamertag or PlayStation Online ID. One third-party guide says a console name may show in Fortnite instead of your Epic display name. If you play across platforms, think about how your Xbox name will look elsewhere, and keep it simple so it works in all of those places. Our guide to Roblox and Minecraft username ideas covers the sandbox games.

Content and conduct

Xbox applies its own naming and conduct rules, and offensive names can be rejected. We did not review those rules for this guide, so read them on the Xbox site. As a general guide, avoid hate, slurs, sexual content, real tragedies and personal details such as your full name, school, address or birth year.

How to test an Xbox name

  1. The length test. Count the characters. Aim for 12 or fewer.
  2. The character test. Stick to letters and numbers.
  3. The breath test. Can you say it in one breath?
  4. The typing test. Ask a friend to type it after hearing it once.
  5. The suffix test. Would you be happy if a number appeared after #? If not, pick a more unusual base name.
  6. The search test. Search the name online. If a creator uses it, pick a variation.
  7. The platform test. Enter it on the official Xbox page and look at the preview. Only Xbox can say whether the name is free. Our tool never claims a name is available.

A worked example

Marcus is setting up a new Xbox profile and wants a calm, team-ready name. His first idea is CopperCottage, which is 13 characters and too long. He tries a shorter version, CopperCabin at 11, which fits. He searches and finds a creator with the same name, so he tries another route. He pairs a mood word with a role and gets SteadyAce, which is 9 characters and leaves room for a suffix. He tests it with a friend, who types it correctly. On the Xbox page, the name shows as free without a suffix, and the preview looks clean on both modern and classic displays.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Choosing a name longer than 12 characters.
  2. Using underscores, which are not in the classic character list.
  3. Ignoring the suffix and being surprised by it later.
  4. Not checking how the name looks on older displays.
  5. Assuming a change is free every time.
  6. Using personal details like a full name or birth year.
  7. Copying a popular streamer or creator.
  8. Choosing a name that is hard to say in voice chat.
  9. Relying on an old guide when the rules may have changed.
  10. Assuming a name is free without checking the official page.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Xbox gamertag be?

Microsoft documents 12 characters for modern gamertags and 15 for classic ones. Microsoft has tested 15 for unique Latin-letter names with Insiders, but plan for 12.

What is the number after the # sign?

It is a suffix added automatically when the name you chose is already taken. It lets two players have the same base name.

Can I use an underscore in an Xbox gamertag?

The classic character list in Microsoft's documentation has only letters, numbers, a comma and a space. Our tool avoids underscores for Xbox. Check the preview on the Xbox page for your case.

Is changing my gamertag free?

Guides report that the first change is free and later changes cost a fee, which was reported at US$9.99 at launch and may vary by region. Check the Xbox page for the current price.

Can the generator check if an Xbox name is available?

No. It creates ideas and limits them to 12 characters without underscores. Only Xbox can confirm whether a name is free.

Conclusion

A strong Xbox gamertag fits within 12 characters, uses letters and numbers, and is unusual enough to avoid the suffix. Build it from two short words, test it with a friend, and check the preview on the official page. When you are ready, open the Gamertag Generator, choose Xbox in the platform menu, and pick the result that passes the tests above.
